What we do

We work directly with community organisations, people who work in communities and with people who make policy.

We deliver large scale programmes across Scotland to help build the capacity of the community sector, support public agencies to work effectively with communities and to widen participation in local democracy.

We support and manage a series of networks, using our learning from these and working with communities and community practitioners to inform policy and legislation.

A major part of our work is providing research, training and consultancy services. All of our services are tailored to meet the individual needs of the organisations and partnerships we support. Find out more about our training.

We work closely with the European Community Development Network and the International Association of Community Development.

The LEAP framework is designed to support a partnership approach to achieving change and improvement in the quality of community life.

Communities Channel Scotland

The Communities Channel Scotland is a website which puts communities in the spotlight by connecting people and sharing ideas.

Building Stronger Community Organisations

This resource is designed to build the skills, confidence and knowledge of refugee-led organisations and refugee supporting organisations, although most of the materials will be useful to any community group.

Participation requests

Participation requests are one way that communities can ask to work with public bodies to make services better. SCDC works to raise awareness, and support the use, of participation requests, as well as to help strengthen and improve how they work.

Rebooting Resilience

This programme aims to explore what resilience looks like in our communities, how we can build on existing good practice and improve how communities and local agencies can work together to develop strong, resilient communities.

This introductory open course will help develop your understanding of the principles, practice and policy connections of community development in Scotland today.

Delivered by our experienced team of trainers, you'll explore how community development is a key part of Scotland's public policy landscape, underpinned by the fundamental principles of participation, equality, human rights, and social justice.

In this course, you will gain an understanding of:

Community development principles, practice and the policy context in Scotland.
The key components of community development practice.
The practical application of community development approaches in their own work context.
Further training and opportunities to support community development practice (including community engagement, community capacity building, co-production, community-led action research, community-led health & more)

Delivered online, our training is always engaging and participative, allowing time for discussion and reflection – no ‘death by Powerpoint’. We bring more than 30 years of community development knowledge and experience, ensuring we offer an authoritative and value-led training experience.

What it costs

This training costs a nominal £20 per participant, to be billed by invoice to your organisation. This fee helps to ensure places are taken up, and so we don't run events to a smaller number than expected while having a significant waiting list.

Please let us know if you can’t make it

Like many organisations who deliver events and training online, we sometimes see drop-off in attendee numbers. While we understand schedules change, we ask you, kindly, to let us know if you cannot make it so we can offer your place to someone else.

If you don’t let us know you cannot attend we will follow up with you via email, and send a £20 ‘Non-attendance fee’ invoice to your organisation.
