Module 10: Progress so far and what next

Introduction

This module is designed to help you think about how the learning resource is helping your group to get stronger. In completing it you should consider.

  • Whether the modules you have used helped you be better at meeting your community's needs?

  • What learning would be useful for your group to do next?

It's designed to be used after you have worked through  the modules you originally planned to do.

Let's get started

  • Why do you think it's important to review your learning?

  • Who do you need to involve in this discussion?

Write your answers on a flipchart or note them in this form.

1. Have the modules you have used helped you to meet your community's needs?

Now watch this short presentation about how the resource was designed to be used.

Group discussion 1 - How has working on the modules helped you?

Discuss these questions for 30 mins:

  • Have the modules increased your knowledge and skills?

  • Have they improved your group’s ability to work together and share tasks effectively?

  • Are they helping your group to be more effective in meeting your community's needs?

Use the exercise form here to record your answers

2. What would it be useful for your group to do next?

It's important that your group continues to develop as your community becomes more established or the people on your committee change. This means that your purpose and priorities might evolve over time to reflect the situations your communities face.

For example you might need to support people arriving from a new resettlement programme or to deal with changes in asylum law. This could mean you need to refine the plans you have made or where you get the funding you need.   For these reasons your organisation might want to consider:

  • Reviewing your learning in a particular area by repeating a module you have already done.

  • Doing other modules within the resource which you didn’t do the first time but which are more relevant now.

  • Asking SRC or other partners to help develop some additional training that the website doesn't cover.

Group discussion 2 -  What do you think it would be useful to do next

Look back at the Module Guide that you completed in Module 1.   Download and save a new version of the Module Guide , date it and name the file Learning Review Version.

Now repeat the exercise below to help you think about the learning needs of your organisation now.

The Module Guide tells you the name of each module, what the module covers, and what the module will help you to do.

It’s important to make sure that everyone on the committee has the skills and knowledge they need, so think carefully about this when setting your module priorities.

As a group, work through the list and agree whether each module is:

  • High priority: We find the things this module covers challenging and need to know more.

  • Medium priority: We have some knowledge within our committee but want to learn more.

  • Low priority: We do this very well so don’t feel this module would be useful now.

When doing this, think about the discussion you had earlier about strengths and challenges. This is not about judging your group, rather it’s about helping you to decide what modules would be most useful for everyone in your group.

Fill in your answers in your new Module Guide.

Exercise 3  Putting your next phase of learning into action

If you do decide that you want to learn more as a group to strengthen your organisation it's important to make sure that you agree what needs to be done to make that happen.

Take some time as a group to agree:

  • What are the next steps in organising more learning sessions?

  • Who will take on what tasks to organise these?

  • When will you do it?

Add your answers to this template form.

If the learning you think you need now is not in the learning resource already, or if one of the current modules needs more detail,  please tell us in the online form below and we will look at whether this could be developed for you.
