New climate assembly planned after 2030 target dropped

A new climate assembly is to be convened after the Scottish Government confirmed it will no longer use 2030 as the target date for a 75% cut in Scotland's emissions.

With new five-year measures and 2045 remaining as the net zero goal, the government announced a series of actions, including a “new assembly/participative process, which, unlike previous assemblies, will develop public understanding of the implications of the transition to net zero for Scottish households and businesses.”

Scotland’s first Climate Assembly convened in November 2020 and saw 100 people representative of Scotland deliberate about how to respond to the climate crisis. The assembly resulted in 16 goals and 81 recommendations.

Separately in 2020, the Citizen’s Assembly for Scotland saw people come together to explore “What kind of country are we trying to build?” The assembly produced a vision for the country going forward and series of recommendations.

Further engagement with communities around climate issues is essential if we’re going to meet the urgency this requires, so we’ll be watching with interest as these plans progress.
