Resources to explore community resilience following Storm Éowyn

This article was featured in the SCDC Weekly - 29th January 2025

With the aftermath of last week's recording-breaking storm still being felt by many, it's worth exploring the role that community organisations play in supporting local responses to emergencies.

Community resilience is about communities and individuals harnessing resources and expertise to help themselves prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies, in a way that complements the work of the emergency responders.

On-going wider community resilience is also vital in helping communities not only to respond to short-term emergencies but longer-term issues such as climate change, cost of-living, public health emergencies like pandemics and more.

Ready Scotland have a range of materials available, including specific guidance for community organisations to enable them to play their as part of a wider resilience response. They also have a series of 30 minute learning modules aimed at individuals, community groups, and voluntary organisations.

Through SCDC's Rebooting Resilience programme, we have published a series of resources focused on learning and examples of how communities can be supported to become more resilient. And to build on this work, we will be publishing a new, updated resource focused on community-led resilience later this year.
