What are we leaning about climate assemblies?

This article was featured in the SCDC Weekly - 1st May 2024.

Last week we featured the news that a new climate assembly could be convened in Scotland, and while recent events make it less clear what this could look like, there’s certainly helpful international examples emerging.

The Knowledge Network on Climate Assemblies last year brought together a report which aims to present some of that learning, highlighting how “under the right conditions, they can have significant impact on climate policy and governance.”

However, according to KNOCA, “the most striking overall learning is that the impact of climate assemblies has varied widely because of the different ways they have been organised and integrated into the political system.”

Specific areas of improvement are around defining the remit of assembly, ensuring transparency, presenting the benefits of the process to the sceptical, and how the assembly’s recommendations are followed-up and acted upon.

The latest version of the emerging trends report will be published at a launch event tomorrow, and will be useful reading for those looking to understand more about what learning we could carry forward to practice in Scotland.
