Last week SCDC attended the launch of the Suicide Prevention Scotland public awareness campaign, highlighting the lived and living experience of four ambassadors who shared their stories.
The premise is "What if a conversation about suicide could save a life?". Each of the four ambassadors shared their experiences, reflections, and a personal letter written by themselves or their loved one.
The short films from each ambassador look back and reflect on how things might have been had they had known how to ask for help, with others sharing how such conversations saved them. Each one shows the power of asking and talking about suicide.
They are beautifully and sensitively filmed, and whilst a tough subject, they are an essential watch for anyone who works with people. There’s also information and resources for professionals who may be working around this area.
The Scottish Government and COSLA have a joint Suicide Prevention Strategy "Creating Hope Together", and whilst the ambassadors talk about some really difficult times through the series of videos, they all show hope for the future, and a hope for a Scotland where suicide is prevented.
